JUSTICE FOR NANDIGRAM! NO SPECIAL ENTERPRISE ZONES!

To: Dow Chemical Chairman Andrew Liveris, President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of State Rice, Secretary-General Ban, Congressional Leaders, Governor of West Bengal Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi and members of the U.S. and Indian media.

I am writing to demand an immediate end to repressive atrocities being purpetrated on the peasants of the Nandigram district in West Bengal, India by agents of the state government to overcome their resistance to the seisure of their land for a "Special Enterprise Zone" for the benefit of a Dow Chemical hub. I further demand a full investigation, and the prosecution and conviction of those responsible for the atrocities, which have included massacres and mass rapes in January, March and November of 2007 and continuing in March and April of 2008 and up to the present. So far these atrocities have resulted over 100 known deaths, the rape of over 200 women, over 100 homes burned to the ground, over 9000 people left homeless and many people disappeared. The injuries and deaths have been well documented by the Medical Service Centre, which provided treatment to the victims.

I further call for an end to the special enterprise zones in other areas, including the Pohang Steel Company project in Orissa, where the people are also resisting the forced acquisition of their land just as did those in Nandigram. These "Special Enterprise Zones" set up conditions of virtual slave labor where no labor laws or regulations apply and provide multinational corporations with free reign to operate without taxes and with massively subsidized infrastructure, dispossessing tens of thousands of peasants from the fruitful arable land they have farmed for centuries.

Stop the Special Enterprise Zones! Bring those responsible for the massacres, mass rapes, disappearances, home burnings and other atrocities of state repression to justice!

Sincerely,
(Your signature will be appended here based on the contact information you enter in the form above)
