In Nandigram in West Bengal, India, Dow Chemical tried to evict peasants from the land their families had occupied for centuries to establish a chemical hub in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) where no labor regulations apply, economic activity is free of taxation and free or subsidized infrastructure is provided the corporations at public expense. But the people of Nandigram refused to be moved, digging up roads and blocking bridges to make them impassable, AND THEY WON! They stopped the SEZ. But in the process they faced and are still facing brutal state repression including massacres and mass rapes. These atrocities occurred in January, March and November of 2007 and March and April of 2008, and they are continuing.

In November of 2007, Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark led a delegation from the International Action Center which directly witnessed the heroism of the people and the horrendous repression of the state for the benefit of Dow Chemical. This website reports on that trip and this exemplary struggle.
